East Africa is a fast-growing market for natural fertilizers, with strong demand to restore soils and lift yields. Tanzania has a clear, dedicated fertilizer regulator, which makes it a useful entry point to the wider region.
Why East Africa is attractive
- Large smallholder and commercial farming sectors needing affordable soil inputs.
- Widespread soil degradation driving demand for materials that rebuild fertility.
- A regional market: the East African Community (EAC) links Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and others.
Tanzania: the TFRA system
Tanzania regulates fertilizers through the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA), which controls importation, production, trade, storage and distribution. Key points for importers:
- Product registration with TFRA before a fertilizer can be traded.
- A fertilizer dealer / trader licence from TFRA, plus a trading licence from the local authority and suitable storage facilities; licences are typically valid for one year and renewed annually.
- A fertilizer import permit, applied for through TFRA's system.
- TBS (Tanzania Bureau of Standards) sets and checks quality standards.
- A phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin for plant-health clearance.
The wider East African Community
While the EAC operates as a common market, each member country runs its own fertilizer registration, standards and plant-health rules. Kenya, for example, works through KEPHIS and KEBS (covered in our separate Kenya & Africa insight). The common thread across the region is consistent: product registration, a phytosanitary certificate, and compliance with national quality standards.
