Importing natural fertilizers from India is straightforward once you know the steps. This guide walks overseas buyers through the process from first enquiry to delivered consignment.
Step 1 — Define your product and specifications
Decide exactly what you need — vermicompost, cow dung powder, natural compost or natural manure — along with packaging (25 kg / 50 kg bags or bulk) and any specifications such as moisture range. Clear specifications make quoting faster and more accurate.
Step 2 — Find a reliable exporter
Choose a supplier who is properly registered and export-ready. Look for:
- An IEC (Import Export Code) and GST registration
- An FIEO RCMC (Registration-cum-Membership Certificate) confirming export status
- A willingness to provide samples, photos and clear documentation
- Transparent, itemised quotations
Step 3 — Request samples and confirm quality
Ask for a sample before committing to a large order. Many exporters provide free samples (with the buyer covering courier). Confirm the product matches your needs and growing conditions.
Step 4 — Agree commercial terms
Settle price, quantity, payment terms and the Incoterms — commonly FOB (you arrange shipping from the Indian port) or CIF (the exporter arranges shipping and insurance to your port). These are confirmed in a proforma invoice or sales contract.
Step 5 — Documentation
Natural fertilizers are agricultural goods, so paperwork matters. Typical export documents include:
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- HS code 3101 classification (animal or vegetable fertilisers)
- Phytosanitary certificate — usually required for plant/animal-origin agricultural goods
- Certificate of Origin
- Bill of Lading (sea) or Airway Bill (air)
Step 6 — Shipping and customs
Your exporter (or their freight forwarder) arranges shipping from an Indian port. On arrival, your local customs broker clears the goods using the documents above and your country's import rules for fertilizers. Confirm any import permits your country requires before shipping.
